GRAMMAR - Dative Case - Feminine

The Dative case is used when we are giving or doing something to someone/something. Sounds abstract? It's not!

Thinking Brain

Apart from very obvious stuff like "I gave Ewa my car", consider these two statements

  • I helped Ewa = I gave Ewa help
  • I trusted the government = I gave my trust to the government

So the concept of 'giving' is widely used in every language. When you are 'giving' we are in the Dative Case.

The good news is, for feminine nouns, adjectives and nouns end exactly the same way as in the Locative Case - soft ending on the noun and 'ej' ending of the adjectives (and forms of my, your, this, etc).

  • I trusted the new chemist/drug store (male) - Ufałem nowej aptece
Transfer

Endings of the Dative case, just like all other cases, are applied to people's names as well.

  • I helped Ewa (male) - Pomagłem Ewie

As we when we looked at the Locative case, if in doubt use an 'ie' ending. So how would you say:

  • I helped Paulina (male) -
  • He helped Paulina -
  • We helped Paulina -
  • She helped Ewa -
  • They helped Ewa (mixed group) -
Transfer

Take your time to think out these sentences.:

Thinking these out, rather than trying to remember them, makes learning faster.

  • I trusted Paulina (male) -
  • I trusted my work (male) -
  • He trusted your sister -
  • She helped your wife -
  • We helped that woman -
