Learn Polish - I have for a name ...
The verb 'to have' has a wider use in Polish. For example we don't say 'My name is ...', we say 'I have for a name ...'
- I have for a name Tim (My name is Tim) - Mam na imię Tim
More literally it means 'I have for a first name'
- First name - Imię
- for - Na
We saw 'na' in the beer advert of the previous lesson - 'Czas na EB'.
'Na' can also mean other things but for now we'll just remember it as meaning 'for'
- What is your name? - Jak masz na imię?
Literally this is 'How do you have for a first name?'
- How - Jak
'Jak' can also mean other things but for now we'll just remember it as meaning 'how'
Formal or informal you.
'Masz' and 'Myślisz' are the way we say 'you have' and 'you think' to a friend or in an informal situation with people of your own age group. It is known as the 'informal you'.
We'll learn the 'formal you' to speak to people we don't know later but just be aware of the difference.
As someone learning Polish it's fine to use the informal you everywhere. You'll raise a few eyebrows with traditionalists ... but at least you will be communicating and putting what you have learnt into practice.
