My, Your and Old Beer
Expressing posession (my phone, your car) is key in any language. Here we'll see how it is done in Nominative, Accusative and Genetive. But first a new word.
- Old - Stary
Stary is used to describe something so it is an adjective which means we can expect to see the ending change depending on the gender of the noun and the case.
We know how adjectives like 'nowy' change depending on the gender of the noun and the case so take a while to think out how 'stary' would be said in the following cases.
- Nominative feminine -
- Nominative neuter -
- Accusative feminine -
- Accusative masculine (Animate) -
- Genetive feminine -
- Genetive masculine and neuter -
Thinking out the forms of new adjectives you learn will help you remember the endings far better than endless listen and repeat exercises.
My
- Masculine: My car - Mój samochód
The endings of 'mój' change depending on the gender and the case but we don't have to learn these changes as we already know them from how adjectives change. Look at the matching endings below:
- Feminine: My mineral water - Moja mineralna woda
- Neuter: My old beer - Moje stare piwo
- Accusative Feminine: I have my mineral water - Mam moją mineralną wodę
- Accusative Masculine (Animate): I like my new doctor - Lubię mojego nowego lekarza
- Genetive Feminine: I'm looking for my mineral water - Szukam mojej mineralnej wodą
- Genetive Masculine/Neuter: I don't have my old smartphone - Nie mam mojego starego smartfona
Your
- Masculine: Your car - Twój samochód
- Feminine: Your pizza - Twoja pizza
As you can see 'mój' and 'twój', 'moja' and 'twoja' end the same. Their ending changes also match in other genders and cases so how would you say 'your' in these cases:
- Nominative neuter -
- Accusative feminine -
- Accusative masculine (Animate) -
- Genetive feminine -
- Genetive masculine and neuter -
As we can see these same endings - 'ą', 'ego' and 'ej' are coming up again and again. Once we are familiar with which case they belong to we won't need to learn the different forms of words parrot fashion.
