THE PAST - Thinking out past tense verbs

In the past few lessons we've seen how to get all the past tense forms of a verb if we know the 'I form'. Let's pull this together by working through three new verbs.

Thinking Brain
  • I trusted (male) - Ufałem
  • I trusted (female) - Ufałam

First we get the STEM by dropping 'łem'/'łam' - 'ufa'

For the 'you (informal)' form we add a 'łaś' or 'łeś' (depending on the gender of the person we are talking to). As a mental hook remember how many times we have seen 'a' associated with feminine.

  • You trusted (talking to a female) -
  • You trusted (talking to a male) -

So to get the 'he' form we take the STEM and add 'ł' and for the 'she' form we add 'ła'. There's that 'a' again for feminine

  • He trusted -
  • She trusted -

For the 'we' form we take the STEM and add 'liśmy'

  • We trusted -

Finally for the 'they' form we take the STEM and add 'li' or 'ły' if we are talking to/about an all female group

  • They trusted (mixed) -
  • They trusted (all female) -
Transfer
  • I helped (male) - Pomogłem

Take your time to think out the forms:

Thinking these out, rather than trying to remember them, makes learning faster. If you need to scroll up the page, do that and then come back and work out the form.

  • I helped (female) -
  • You helped (male) -
  • You helped (female) -
  • She helped -
  • He helped -
  • We helped -
  • They helped (mixed) -
  • They helped (female only group) -

If you listen carefully to 'he helped' you might notice the two 'o's are not pronounced the same. It is spelt 'pomógł'. Again this is a softening to watch out for throughout the language ... 'od czasu do czasu'!
