The mushy must and the we form

We've seen that once we have the 'he/she/it form' of a verb we can get the 'you (informal) form' by simply adding 'sz'. Ma -> Masz, Lubi -> Lubisz, Myśli -> Myślisz, etc. There is a similar trick for the 'we form'

Thinking Brain

To get the 'we form' of a verb all we need to do is add 'my' to the 'he/she/it' form:

  • He has - On ma
  • We have - mamy

So how would you say:

  • We like -
  • We think -
  • We want -
Transfer

We saw in "I want" how we use the 'to form' of verbs in English.

  • I want to go
  • I want to have a house

In Polish, as with many European languages, we also use the 'to form' with other verbs so we say, literally:

  • We must to go to town
  • We must to have a new computer

In English we can express that something must be done as "I must" or "I have to". In Polish we only use "must".

  • I must go to town - Muszę iść do miasta
  • She must have a new computer - Ona musi mieć nowy komputer
  • Does she have to have a new computer? - Czy ona musi mieć nowy komputer?

Notice how the 'si' combination of letters makes a 'sh' sound. We've come across this before but this commonly used verb is a great reminder.

So now you know how to get to the 'we form' of a verb how would you say.

  • We must go to the supermarket -
Graduation Cap
  • To fly - lecieć

Note again that characteristic 'ć' at the end that we see in almost all 'to forms' of verbs

Polish and English both use the same common phrase when we are somewhere but we need to leave in a hurry - "I must fly"

So how would you say:

  • I must fly -
  • We must fly -
