Learn Polish - Making it Stick - Anki Cards
Anki is a computer or smart phone based flash card system which will help you learn new vocab if you put aside a few minutes every day.
Head over to https://apps.ankiweb.net/ to get Anki for your laptop, tablet, iphone or Android device.
There are installation instructions on the site. I recommend getting the app for your smart phone so you can do your cards anywhere.
Start with the deck 'Polish Core 100' to begin basic vocab learning. See https://docs.ankiweb.net/getting-started.html#shared-decks for a guide on how to import a shared deck of cards
The next best deck is 'uTalk GCSE Polish'.
This deck will introduce you to the concept that word endings often change in Polish
- A car - Samochód
- Next to the car - Obok samochodu
- In the car - W samochodzie
We'll look at why this is and how to know when to change word endings later in the course. For now just memorize the phrases in the deck.
Here is something interesting. The word Samochód is made up of two words
- Self - Samo
- Walk - Chód
So quite literally something that 'Self walks'.
Note how the accent on the 'o' is changing the way we pronounce 'o'. It is no longer 'o' as in 'orbit' but like in 'you'.
Try looking up the Polish for airplane and you'll find out what 'lot' means because the Polish for 'airplane' is literally translated as 'self flight'!
Have a look at this book cover. The title starts 'Samo'. Answer the question below the image.
