Polish Grammar - Adjectives and Genders
In the last lesson we covered what a noun is and how to idenfity its gender. The gender of the noun affects other words in a sentence as we'll see now
Adjectives are words that describe nouns:
- normal, big, red, good, ecological, etc.
Up until now all the nouns we have been using are masculine (we know this because they don't end in 'a', 'o' or 'e').
- czas, produkt, bank, raport, hotel, komputer, dokument, smak
If the noun is not masculine we need to change the ending of the adjective as follows
- normalna kobieta - (normalny -> normalna)
- normalne jedzenie - (normalny -> normalne)
Note the associations. Kobieta ends in 'a' and the adjective ends in 'a'. Jedzenie ends in 'e' and the adjective ends in 'e'. All neuter adjectives end in 'e'
- normalne jajko - (normalny -> normalne)
You can get your adjective pronounciation wrong and everyone will understand you so don't let it stop you communicating. If you say:
- Lubię normalny jedzenie
You will be absolutely fine. Grammatically wrong but completely understandable. Start practicing genders in your written work but don't let the fear of making errors stop you from communicating!
Putting your Polish into use, even if you are not 100% correct, is much better than not using it at all because you are worried about making mistakes
Adjectives and Genders
In the lesson we saw how to change the endings of adjectives
- Feminine nouns: change the ending to 'a' - normalny -> normalna
- Neuter nouns: change the ending to 'e' - normalny -> normalne.

Adjectives without the noun
We don't always need the noun. Say we are out with a friend and pointing at something. We might ask 'Is that normal?'
In Polish this is the same but the way we end the word 'normal' must reflect what we are talking about.
In this exercize change the adjective endings as needed based on what is being talked about.
