Zabawny / zabawna

'Zabawna' means 'funny' but if we looked up 'funny' in the dictionary we'll find it spelt with a 'y' on the end - 'zabawny'. So what is going on?

This is your first Polish grammar rule:

If the thing we are talking about (książka, taksówka, etc.) ends in 'a' then the word we are using to describe it must also end in 'a'

• zabawny film -> a funny film
• zabawna książka -> a funny book

• dobry film -> a good film
• dobra książka -> a good book

• fenomenalny film -> a phenomenal film
• fenomenalna książka -> a phenomenal book

Remember this as 'the matching a rule' because both words end in 'a'
