So remember, this 'a' to 'ę' change only happens

  1. with words for things (nouns) which end in 'a' - zupa, pizza, etc.
  2. when we are using a verb positively - mam zupę, lubie pizzę, etc.

In grammar terms we would call these 'noun endings' in the Accusative case (when using a verb positively).

Think of a few words for things you know in Polish that end in 'a' and practice flipping them between the cases like this:
