On ... only once?
A difference you might have noticed in some sentences is that 'on' is only said once compared to English where it needs to be said twice:
- On nie ma brata, ma siostrę - He doesn't have a brother, he has a sister
In Polish once the person is defined there is no need to repeat this - whether it is a sentence or 30 pages of text!
Have a look at this chat:
- Robert: Czy on ma laptopa?
- Sara: Tak ma laptop ale chce kawę
- Robert: OK. Co robi?
- Sara: Pracuje
As you can see 'on' was only used once.
From then on, unless another person is mentioned, it is assumed all text or speech is about him
