a and the

You've probably noticed 'a' and 'the' are missing from sentences.

In Polish these words do not exist. Whether we are talking about a taxi or the taxi is determined by the nature of the situation.

For example if you were waiting with a friend for a taxi and you said to her "Gdzie jest taksówka?" it would be understood that you mean 'Where is the taxi.

If you asked a stranger at an airport "Gdzie jest taksówka?" he would understand you to mean 'Where is a taxi?'.
