Now we know a lot of different endings for nouns one common area of confusion is 'a' endings:

• Chcę ten kota

'Kota' ends in 'a' so does this mean it is feminine and we should be using 'ta' instead of 'ten'?

When we say 'nouns ending in a are feminine' we mean this only when the noun is in the Nominative case

This is how the noun is written if you looked it up in a dictionary or on an app like Google Translate.

This concept is true for all nouns:

• Kot is masculine even though in some cases other than Nominative it is Kota
• Mleko is neuter even though in some cases other than Nominative it is Mleka

So when deciding the gender of the noun it is all about how the noun ends in the Nominative case - how it is in the dictionary.
